It’s no surprise that, next to the kitchen, the bathroom is the most-used room in the house. It’s also the place where functionality is priority number one. How you and your family members move from sink to tub to toilet can make or break a morning routine—and diminish the relaxation you get from a long soak or shower. It’s a room we all use at least once a day. From that invigorating morning shower to a blissful soak in the tub after a long day, our bathrooms work hard to meet a whole host of demands, from purely practical to home-spa-style wellness centers. So, when planning this all-important space, we need bathroom decorating ideas that will help us create a space that steps up to meet all our needs, and look good at the same time. We’ll help you create that perfect balance of functionality and style goals.
It’s why your bathroom layout is so important. And it’s more flexible than you think, no matter how much room you have to work with. Whether you’re starting fresh or tweaking the space you have, there’s a layout to meet your needs. So, get out your measuring tape—and start here.
In case you are buying or selling a house or hoping to renovate your own, one of the main rooms we need to improve is the master bathroom. An outdated bathroom can truly communicate a message of uneasiness and even a lack of sanitization—an area we do not want to spend most of our time in. In particular, who wants to begin their morning in a horrid, not exactly engaging space that only serves to put us in disappointment each day? Probably no one! Even if you’re on a budget, there are still many things you can do with our list of master bathroom ideas.
Modern style can mean different things to different people, but generally speaking, when we refer to modern design, some of the same concepts and strategies are often found: geometrical shapes, neutral or basic colors, little to no decorative flourishes, and natural materials.
You need a bathroom to revamp but you are not sure about how to achieve it right? Well, let’s handle that pressure with several bathroom remodeling ideas that will equip you with what to look for. When it comes to how to decorate your dream bathroom, shower room, en suite, or even your downstairs loo, we’ve got all the expert know-how and style tips you need. From small bathroom ideas to our guide to bathroom color schemes and the latest bathroom trends, we’re here to help you create your perfect bathroom. Whether you want to do a complete overhaul or change a few aspects, we have got your back!
There are essentially three types of bathrooms: primary (usually the owner’s bath, frequently adjoining the primary bedroom); the guest (often ensuite) bath; and powder room (a sink and toilet only).
From there, the layout options—including size, shape, and plumbing—are endless.
Room Size: While size surely matters when deciding on a bathroom layout, it doesn’t always follow that bigger is better. Consider that the size of an average U.S. bathroom is 40 square feet—relatively small, but roomy enough for the basics. If your existing bath is larger (or if you’re starting from scratch and can allocate 100 square feet or more), the good news is you can design a spa-inspired bathroom. But before adding too many bells and whistles, be sure to consider how you use your bath (and who you share it with). Don’t forget that large, luxury layouts almost always come with more upkeep and a higher price tag.
Room Shape: Shape plays such an integral part in setting the style of your bathroom, it’s important to think about what look you’d like to create and what products can help you achieve it. As something that plays such a big role in our daily lives, getting your bathroom just right is important. You’ll need to consider the shape of your room as well as the location of windows and doors to determine the best location for your fixtures. Most baths tend toward simple geometry; squares and rectangles are most popular, offering the most flexibility. Understanding dimensions is an important step in figuring out what your home needs and what it can realistically support. Below are some common bathroom sizes and dimensions to assist you in your decision-making process.
NOTE THAT: Unusual layouts allow for more creativity, but they can be confined as well. An odd-shaped space often has more than its share of nooks and crannies, which can be tricky to work around.
Bathroom Plumbing: To further enunciate the dissemination of water through adequate Plumbing; one reason why Plumbing is so vital is that it helps to regulate the consumption of water. It aids an effective water management system through the use of toilets, faucets, showerheads, and other plumbing products. Plumbing is a major consideration. Large baths that feature multiple sinks on different walls and separate tubs and showers require more complex plumbing systems than small ones. Compact baths—where all of the fixtures are lined up against one wall—can be very efficient, not to mention cost-effective. At the end of the day, consider size, cost, complexity, and your changing needs to determine if the time is right for an overhaul.
Popular Bathroom Layouts and Designs
Classic Bathroom: Whether you’re looking to remodel your entire bathroom or just one aspect, it can be difficult to know where to start. This 40-square-foot design is timeless because it works. The door opens easily, revealing a row of fixtures (sink, toilet, tub) all plumbed on the left-hand wall. This compact rectangular layout is simple and inexpensive to install. The downside is it doesn’t afford tons of counter space. Classic style in the bathroom – it is always elegant cover with functional content, calm neutral colors, pleasing textures, traditional, ergonomic layout of sanitary ware, furniture, and accessories.
White Modern Bathroom: With so much use every day, it’s important to have a bathroom that’s both functional and comfortable. The best way to ensure utility in your bathroom is by having it laid out such that it can serve your needs while remaining stylish. Clean white lines and a few organic touches to your bathroom can change the entire look. Continuous flooring and white wall tiles throughout the room will freshen the look and make the bathroom appear polished and clean. This bathroom is certainly stark but also rather serene. You can easily imagine freeing your mind from daily worries in a space that has nothing to distract you. Modern bathrooms can accommodate color very well, especially if it's a single, bright shade. Yellow (as in this contemporary primary bathroom) red, blue, or green—as long as it's a saturated hue and used as an accent, it will enhance your modern design.
Modern Luxury Bathroom: The modern style is great for small spaces but can be even more striking when applied to larger areas. This floor plan is for quite a long and narrow space, but the way the area has been configured makes it feel balanced and functional. There is a large wet room area ideal for quick showers, as well as a bath in front of a picture window which would provide a nice view for a long relaxing soak. The toilet and bidet are enclosed in their separate area with a door for ultimate privacy, and there is also a very large dressing area. The walk-in closet benefits from storage along each wall with a central area left empty so that you have somewhere to stand while getting dressed. The bathroom features two sinks and vanity areas, one on either side of the bath, allowing two users to get ready simultaneously.
Small but Functional Bathroom: This master bathroom floor plan includes a separate toilet area for privacy, a double sink and vanity area, a bath, a separate shower cubicle, and a walk-in closet. Each area is certainly not huge, but it is plenty big enough to be functional and comfortable.
The walk-in closet has limited storage, and you may find that you need additional drawers in the master bedroom itself. The toilet area has sacrificed a bidet, but many people feel these are not necessary anyway. There is plenty of floor space remaining in the room to allow two people to use it at once without feeling overcrowded. A small yet mighty modern and functional bathroom features a lot of the things we've seen so far: black and white styling, clean geometrical shapes, and organic decorative elements can be a great idea for achieving the goal!
Jacuzzi Bathroom: This floor plan will be popular among those who enjoy relaxing in the jacuzzi and hot tub, as it allows you to create a spa-like area to unwind in your bathroom. This master bathroom features a wet room area with a soaker tub and a separate jacuzzi. It has a double sink area with a large countertop and a separate toilet room featuring a toilet and bidet. The closet area is relatively small but conveniently placed. Floor space is abundant, making the room feel open and airy. By positioning this in the corner, it utilizes the space best but also makes it the focal point of the room. There is a separate toilet room to ensure privacy and a sink on either side of the jacuzzi to accommodate two users washing or brushing their teeth at once. This bathroom lacks an adjoining walk-in closet, but there is ample floor space in the center of the room for getting dressed if you bring your clothing for the day into the room with you.
Warm and Modern Bathroom: Not all bathrooms have to be cold and sterile to be modern. The space is warm, inviting, and welcoming. We still focus on geometrical shapes (in this case, egg-like shapes via the sink and tub), a simple color scheme (warm neutrals), and minimal decorative elements. Wood and stone (or convincing look-alikes) are typical modern features.
TIPS: Enticing Stone Tile
Naturally, in any bathroom space, a fundamental part of the design will be the tile. For that welcoming, “spa-like” look, nothing beats an element of stone tile. It looks beautiful and feels satisfying to the touch while also being highly functional. If the budget allows, including some stone in the design, either as a singular material or contrasted against other porcelain tiles, will bring a lot of richness to the palette and a sense of sophistication.
Dark and Relaxing Bathroom: Modern bathrooms don't always go with the white, gleaming look. Sometimes dark is also modern, as with this modern bathroom space dominated by a dark gray slate tile. The light wood furniture and white fixtures bring a needed touch of light, color, and organic feel. Notice the minimal hardware and how the shape of the sinks echoes the size and shape of the tiles. One of the advantages of choosing dark bathroom ideas over other designs is that they can create a truly, visually exciting space. They allow you to play with contrasts among your bathroom ideas: stunning dark walls with pops of marble, metallics, and wood, and don’t forget you can add in accent colors too.
Mid-Century Modern Bathroom: Modern style also extends to what designer's call "mid-century," a decorating style inspired by the sensibilities and building practices of the 50s to 80s. Coined around the mid-1980s, mid-century modern is a style that works well for bathrooms and has been at the top of the decor trend charts for quite a while. A combination of two design types, modern and mid-century, there are many ways to interpret this style. The granite countertop and white wall enhance the modern atmosphere in the bathroom. The rustic look looks good in Mid Century modern style. The use of reclaimed oak wood in the mirror list and big vanity with a granite top is enough to make the rustic look. The stone wall and classic lamp even enhance the rustic style. The use of a vintage rug in tiles flooring and pale white brick on the wall is a great preference for you to create such a contemporary design in your bathroom. The idea of tradition upholds the clean line appearance and the function of each thing in the room.
A new bathroom can vastly enhance the aesthetics of your home and provide another source of comfort. Whether you want to install a new bathroom in a home extension or loft, it provides an opportunity to improve the decor and design of your property. Apart from creating an additional source of relaxation, there are numerous other benefits. Remember that the bathroom is a reflection of the personality of the owner. The bathroom design is certainly to the tastes and desires of the homeowner. Its function is not only as a place to clean yourself but also as a place for relaxation after undergoing routine and busy activities throughout the day. But even if the kitchen is the most favorite room, then perhaps always remember that the bathroom is the most important room in the house!
