Your bedroom is called, and it's looking for some love. While we tend to obsessively arrange (and re-arrange, and re-re-arrange) the rest of our house, bedrooms often get left out, maybe because they're more private, and less likely to be viewed by houseguests, or maybe because the primary activity that takes place in them is (you guessed it) sleep. Your bedroom is perhaps the most essential room in your home. It's where you sleep, so it needs to be a relaxing environment. You also want it to be arranged practically so you can move around the space as you go through your daily routine. It's easy to create a beautiful room without sacrificing your style.
At some point in recent history, bedrooms became multipurpose spaces: They're playrooms for our kiddos, a go-to location for work-from-home nooks, and the ideal TV hangout spot since everyone knows beds are cozier than couches. We expect our bedrooms to be packed with practical storage, while also (somehow) feeling restful. If bedrooms were our employees, they'd be demanding a raise, because we've driven them far outside their job description. The simplest questions sometimes can be the hardest ones to answer. “Where should I position my bed?” is a case in point. The answers can be many and contradictory, and the deeper you dig, the more you discover.
The trickiest problem that you may deal with in a small bedroom is managing your limited space. You wish you could cram the furniture you need while earning the ultimate comfort you desire. It may seem not very easy, but it does not mean you cannot do it. Working with a bedroom that has limited space does not mean you cannot create an appealing layout. You just have to know a few tips and tricks for arranging your furniture. Luckily, there are many ideas for creating the right bedroom layout. It is as simple as measuring your space to investing in multipurpose pieces.
To achieve this goal, you need to know how to arrange and balance your bed, wardrobe, and chair with other non-essential furniture pieces that you already crammed in your space. But don't worry we got you covered!
Here are a few tips to arrange your bedroom furniture appealingly and functionally.
Understand the layout of the room
Before you buy new furniture or try to fit your furniture inside the bedroom, you need to know how the bedroom is set up. Window placement or wall size will affect how you arrange the furniture. Things to consider when you are scoping the layout include:
The measurement of the walls. Use a tape measure to get a precise measurement of the wall space.
The measurement of the floor space. You can use an online resource like myfloor.com to easily make a floor plan for your home.
The placement of wall outlets and telephone jacks. You will need the electrical outlets to plug in alarm clocks, lamps, televisions, and other devices.
The placement of the cable input. You will have to place TVs wherever the satellite or cable connections are placed in the room, or else drill new holes and move your wires (best left to your satellite company or other trained professionals).
Windows. Take note of which walls have windows, how low they are, and how many are in the room.
Closets and other doors. Look at which walls have doors in them, where the closet is located, and which walls are uninterrupted by doors and windows.
Space Measurements
The first thing you want to do is measure everything from your overall space to your preferred furniture.
For your space, you want to measure every aspect from the windows and doors to the awkward angles and corners. You also want to get an understanding of your bedroom layout. Aspects such as your outlets, windows, doors, and wall size can impact your bedroom furniture arrangement. For example, you are going to need the areas closest to your outlets for your alarm clock, television, or laptop desk, but you also want to ensure you are not blocking any doors or walkways.
Check if there's room for additional furniture
After placing these items, decide if there is room for other items. Also, think about what other things you need in your bedroom. Do you need a desk to do work at? Do you want a chair to read and relax in? Finish off your bedroom by placing furniture that fits your needs.
Place a desk with a chair in the room. You can buy a flat desk that fits along an empty wall space or under a window, or buy a corner desk that fits snugly in a corner and out of the way.
Put ottomans at the foot of the bed for extra seating, or put a small armchair in the room for visitors to sit on, or for you to relax in as you unwind.
Place a mirror in the room. This can accompany a vanity, be placed with the desk, or just be hung on the wall.
Before you even consider where your bed can go, you’ll need to bear in mind that the answer is largely determined by the shape of your room. It’s worth drawing out a rough sketch of the room shape, or if you can – a scale drawing, and slotting in any existing furniture that you feel is essential to include within this space. You’ll need to factor in space for walkways to ensure your movement is not restricted in any way, and consider how you want your bed to be featured within the room.
The bed is the key component in any bedroom, and from a design point of view deserves the right attention. However, this may not always be practical due to the room's proportions. If, for example, your bedroom is rectangular, then zoning off the room into different areas is one way to make the layout work.
Make a list of how you will use the bedroom
Sleeping is one obvious activity, but many people spend more time in their bedroom than just at bedtime. Will you watch television or read in your bedroom? Will you get dressed, put on makeup, or fix your hair in this room? Will the bedroom be for one or two people? Is it your bedroom or a guest bedroom? These things will tell you what furniture you need.
You have already taken measurements of your space and furniture, now you need to use those measurements to choose appropriately-sized furniture for your bedroom. The last thing you want to do is choose pieces that do not fit in your space, such as a bulky wardrobe or executive desk that makes it harder to move around the room. Luckily, you can find plenty of pieces that work for a smaller bedroom, such as a narrow wardrobe for your business attire or a smaller desk for your laptop.
Bed in Infront of the Windows
Sometimes, the only space in which a bed can fit is directly in front of the windows. Curtains then become a key component of the design—they must be well made to block out light streaming directly into the room and should also complement a room's aesthetics. Some people think that placing the bed directly under the window is an atrocious idea. They believe it can lead to several problems, such as poor sleep and potential health issues. Therefore, they tend to avoid this position.
Unfortunately, a petite bedroom does not allow you to do it.
Note: You can also look into multipurpose pieces to save space without sacrificing function. A bed with underneath drawers can be used for pajamas or other nighttime essentials, while a storage ottoman can be used as seating for putting on your shoes and storage for your extra blankets. One idea is to look into a loft bed with a built-in workspace and wardrobe. If your bedroom is small, think about buying pieces that serve multi-purposes or save space. Try a bunk-desk combination, which has a high bed with a desk beneath it. Or try a storage bed if you don't have space for a dresser.
Furniture Placements:
When it is time to arrange your furniture, you can start with your bed, as it is the most important piece in your bedroom. Several arrangements work for your bed, which are as follows:
Center of the wall, across from the door.
Along the longest wall of the room.
Along a wall; off-center.
Between two windows.
Regardless of which arrangement you choose, there should be enough space to easily and safely get in and out of bed. You should also avoid blocking the natural light with the headboard or footboard.
Consider the dresser next. For most people, the dresser is the second largest piece of furniture in a bedroom. Place the dresser directly across the bed to balance out the room. If you have a lot of wall space, opt for a low, wide dresser.
Across from the bed to create a sense of balance.
If there is a TV in your bedroom, place it on top of your dresser.
If you would rather read, place your books on top of your dresser.
If you are a TV watcher, you can place your television on top of the dresser. The television should be across from the bed if you plan on watching a lot of TV in bed. Placing it on top of the dresser saves you from needing an extra table for the television. If you don't watch TV but read a lot, then use the dresser as a bookshelf.
Place your dresser under your window.
Save space by placing your dresser inside a large closet.
Of course, your dresser should be placed across from your bed if you are using it for watching television or reading.
If you are tight on space, choose a tall, vertical dresser instead of a wide dresser. This takes up less wall space by utilizing height.
You may choose to place your dresser underneath a window to maximize space.
If your closet is large enough, or there is limited space in your room, you can consider placing the dresser inside the closet.
Place nightstands around the bed. After placing the two larger pieces of furniture, you can start to fill in the room with smaller pieces. Nightstands are exceptionally important. They hold alarm clocks, lamps, books, TV remotes, cell phones, glasses of water, and anything else you might need access to while in bed. The nightstand should be placed on each side of the bed (on only one side if the bed is flush against the wall). Get a nightstand that comes up to the height of your mattress. Nightstands come in all different shapes, sizes, and colors. Think about what you need from a nightstand. Do you want shelves? Drawers? Just a small tabletop? Choose a nightstand that reflects your need.
While you want to ensure there is plenty of natural light in your bedroom, you should still add artificial lighting as well. Place your lamps in spaces for reading, dressing, working, or watching television, and consider wall-mounted sconces or ceiling lights. It is best to avoid bulbs that are too bright in some spaces because you do not want your lighting to keep you from relaxing. If you are looking to create the right bedroom furniture arrangement and layout, the above guide can help your project go smoothly.
Note: Do not have the room cluttered so that there is not ample area to walk around the room or into other rooms. Keep at least two feet between the sides of the bed and the wall or other furniture. You will not want bright lighting when you are trying to unwind, so consider placing lamps in places where you will be reading, watching television, or relaxing. You might want to mount lights on the ceiling or on the wall.
Proper furniture arrangement gives you the opportunity to express your uniqueness through the way you design your room. Some people Nordic lighting to fill their rooms, while others find comfort in eclectic pieces of furniture. Whatever the design may be, it tells a lot about your personality. This is because furniture arrangement is as much an expression of personal styles as it's an expression of function. There you have it!
