Whether you’re superstitious or not, a little extra luck is always welcome – especially regarding stressful, difficult, and overwhelming endeavors, such as residential moves. After all, who wouldn’t want to have a safe and smooth relocation and bring good fortune to their new lives?

Moving to a new home and trying to pack light for a few days? Maybe you’re relocating and hauling your worldly possessions across state lines, or you’re packing two suitcases for a flight before meeting movers at your new place. Or maybe you’re going to be camping out in your new home for a few weeks, doing some fix-ups, before the rest of your stuff catches up with you.

Moving is such an important and life-changing event that there exist countless traditions and superstitions about moving into a new house. And most of those traditions have to do with bringing good luck to the new home. With all of the planning, packing, and general craziness that comes along with the whole relocation process, it can be easy to forget a few small things that happen to make a big difference on moving day (and immediate days after). After all, your phone charger and toothbrush are the last things you want to be frantically searching for after a stressful moving day. Whatever the reason, how do you know which items are essential during your first few nights and what’s optional? What do you need to bring to your new home, and what can you leave behind without kicking yourself for it later? It may seem overwhelming to distill your entire household of possessions into a few essential boxes, but it can be done.

There are several essential household items you need to set up a new house. Whether you are moving into a new apartment or renting an unfurnished house, there are so many things to be done after moving, for instance, you got to buy different kinds of items from toilet soap to broom and buckets to a kitchen knife, the list goes on. The idea is not to scare you, but that’s how it is. I managed to pull it off well and then I thought of creating a list of essential things you would need before moving into a new house.

Note that: There are various moving into new house rituals and charms believed to bring good luck to the home, ward off evil spirits, and banish negative energy from the space. From burning sage and scattering coins on the floor to bringing bread and salt with you when entering your new place for the first time, you can try many different solutions that are meant to fill your home with happiness, harmony, and positive energy

Things To Set Up for Your New House (Kitchen)

Moving into a new house should be fun and exciting. But that’s only possible when you plan properly and furnish your new house with the most essential household things. Not everyone has the same setup of lifestyle and requirements, but there are a few essential things that you need immediately like cooking gas and oven, microwave oven, or induction cooktop.

Setting up your new kitchen can be tedious because there are many essential things you need to set up a functional kitchen. Some of the most essential things needed for your kitchen are here; You must carry the basic cooking utensils with you. These are the items you will require every day and so if your old ones are in good condition, there is no need of buying all of them again.

  • Oven – cooking gas, induction, or microwave.

  • If you are using induction or microwave, then obviously you got to buy compatible pots and pans and trays.

  • The fridge is one of the most essential things to have

  • Kitchen knives

  • Vegetable peeler

  • Chopping board

  • Few spoons, and forks as per your needs - It is important to carry enough cups, dishes plates, and bowls with you. Make sure each of your family members has their own set of cups, glasses, dishes, etc. Such Items especially those made of glass are subjected to easy breakage, so carrying in excess would help you a lot.

  • One whisk

  • A couple of cooking pots and pans, preferably with a lid or cover

  • A few bowls of various sizes can be used to prepare ingredients

  • Airtight containers of various sizes that can be used to store cooked foods

  • Medium size containers to store food grains, flour, etc.

  • Vegetable basket to store onion, potato, and other veggies.

  • Smaller container to store various ingredients like salt, sugar, pulses, etc.

  • Spice Jar

  • Kitchen towels and apron

  • Garbage bin

  • Glass and jug/ Water - You’ll want bottled water if you won’t have immediate access to a filtration system.

  • Plates and bowls to serve food

  • Foil paper to wrap your lunch/ Daily Meal - And by “enough,” we mean enough for one meal for each person. You’ve got to reward all of your helpful movers after all. Fruit, nuts, and granola bars are particular favorites since they require no refrigeration, no preparation, and no utensils. These will help you feel at home and relieve stress.

Don’t underestimate the importance of that last point. If you always end the night with a glass of wine, bring a bottle to reward yourself at the end of your long first day. (Don’t forget the wine opener and a wineglass.) If you’re an avid reader, bring a book you’ve been dying to read to help you fall asleep at night. If you feel more refreshed or polished while you’re wearing makeup, bring a tube of mascara. You’re going to be working hard when you first move in, so make sure you also allow yourself a bit of fun to make the transition as easy as possible.

The Emergency Kit:  First-aid box is probably the most essential thing to have in the house.

Well, it is mandatory to carry your first-aid box with you. You never know when you meet with an accident and need the first-aid things urgently. It is always safe to carry a first-aid box with you rather than rushing to the doctor’s chamber for minor wounds. Keep thermometers, bandages, antiseptic, and tweezers with you. Moving heavy objects can result in a few nicks and scrapes. Be ready with Band-Aids, a thermometer, an Ace bandage, some antiseptic wipes, tweezers, and a few ibuprofens.

Fire Extinguisher – Safety first! If you plan to test out your kitchen by cooking dinner during the first week in your new house, you’re going to need a fire extinguisher on standby. Whether you moved the fire extinguisher yourself or purchased a new one, it’s important to have this little guy nearby just in case that oven doesn’t work quite like you thought it would. Keeping a fire extinguisher in your kitchen will help you control any accidental small fires that could pop up after the move.

Chargers: For all your essential electronics, such as your phone, laptop, and tablet. I have seen many people who do keep the mobile always with them but when it comes to the charger, they simply forget it. Please carry your mobile phone charger while packing your luggage. Often using the wrong chargers or cheap quality ones may damage your phone, so carry your one with you.

Papers and Important Bank documents: Carrying your essential bank details like checkbook and passbook is equally important. These documents contain important information which if lost may cause you unnecessary trouble. Also, never forget about the debit and credit cards while packing to move to your new home.

Batteries: Many goods run on batteries and do not have the option of recharging them. So, if you carry spare batteries with you, they will come to your help in emergencies and spare you from running to the shop. One of the most commonly overlooked items also happens to be one of the most important items when it comes to packing for a move: batteries! Trust me, you’re going to need them during the first week. Whether it’s a TV control that won’t work or a smoke detector that won’t stop beeping, not having batteries on hand will drive you crazy that first few days and nights. If you’re not sure whether your power will be on during the first day/night, you’ll also need flashlights – and of course, more batteries.

A portable alarm clock: Be sure to bring one or install an alarm clock app on your phone. Moving is stressful enough on its own. You don’t want to be late for work, too! Also, if your mobile run out of charge or does any problem, your alarm clock will come to your rescue. So, carry an alarm clock while packing to move to your new home. This will never fail to wake you up early in the morning and at the same time help you check the time whenever you want to.

Toolkit – Whatever you do, don’t forget your toolkit! If you pack it with your belongings, make sure you’ve clearly labeled the box. The chances of you needing a toolkit during the first day and week of living in a new home are very high. While you may not be hanging pictures on the wall yet, you will probably need simple tools, like measuring tape and a utility knife, on day one in your new home. Check to make sure your toolkit includes the following items before moving:

  • Hammer

  • Multiple-sized screwdrivers

  • Measuring tape

  • Pliers

  • Utility knife (for opening boxes)

  • Duct Taper- Somehow, this always seems to come in handy, even at the most unexpected times.

You’d be surprised how much you can do with basics like a hammer, screwdriver, and pliers!

Keys: Yes, you've read it right, carry your keys otherwise, you will be in trouble later. Misplacing your keys can put you at huge risk so be careful while dealing with it. Make sure to hand over the old keys to your family member or the landlord. Take other keys with you, especially the ones you will require in your new home like keys for wardrobes, etc.

The Basic cleaning supplies – You’ve dreamed of that first, glorious moment inside your new home. The closets are spick-and-span, the floors are gleaming and the toilets are clean. Except, they aren’t. Moving is dirty work. Remember to bring soap, shampoo, toothbrush and toothpaste, deodorant, moisturizing cream, plus towels and washcloths for cleaning up. Chances are good that the home you’re moving into won’t be in tip-top shape when you arrive. Even if the previous owners had the place cleaned before you moved in, the home is still going to have a few dust bunnies hiding in the corners – not to mention, the floors are sure to get somewhat dirty during the move. After several relocations myself, I’ve learned the hard way that you need to have cleaning supplies on-hand during the first day of a move. Some supplies to bring with you, include:

  • Paper towels

  • Multi-purpose cleaning spray and Clorox wipes to sanitize surfaces and the inside of the fridge

  • Small vacuum or handheld vacuum

  • Rags and sponges for dishes

  • Dishwasher detergent

  • Laundry detergent

  • Broom and dustpan

  • Toilet bowl cleaner

  • Duster or dusting tool

  • Floor mop and bucket

  • Floor cleaners

  • Glass cleaner is good to have a thing

  • Few doormats

Since we wash, clean or dust things frequently, most of the basic cleaning supplies get finished or damaged quickly. But it is better to carry your old set with you as they will serve your purpose for a few days. You do not have to rush to the shop immediately after reaching your new home.

The things that I have listed here are all very important and carrying these will help you settle down in your new space quickly. Plus, you will also save a lot of money as you do not have to buy these immediately after visiting the new space. This point becomes more relevant if you are shifting to a city or location costlier than your previous one.

Your house contains so many different kinds of stuff and picking the right things to shift to your new home is something confusing. However, things get much easier if you have a list of essential things to pack while moving to a new home and that is surely for you.
