The style appeals to our visual sense as well as to our desires for our way of life. Trends often depict a steady shift toward a new way of living.

However, on the other hand, choosing the latest trends can be a bad move in the long run. Trend forecasting is largely geared to motivate people to buy more stuff and I’m very sensitive to the fact that many families are facing tough times in this challenging economy, people should learn to play with trends if they want to, but resist feeling like they have to go out and buy a million things to stay in style. Whether you are renovating your current home or simply refreshing a room, it’s best to have a space that won’t already look dated by the time it’s finished. 

We finally moved back to our normal routines — be it school, office, travel, meeting friends and loved ones — without any hesitation, and the list goes on. And the best part is, we learned that whatever happens, life moves on, and with little patience, willpower, and positivity, all of us can defeat any odds. As this year ends and a new year beckons, let’s take a look at the interior design trends that are set to rule in 2023. Globalization, global warming, environmental sustainability, and a thriving, busy social life are all major influences on interior design. In 2023, the quest for the ideal design for a livable, harmonious space that reflects contemporary reality will have an impact on every trend.

• Vintage and antique decor: Whether it’s a vintage brass lighting fixture or antique furniture, people are mixing their new furnishings with vintage more than ever.

• Muted, minimalist pillows: People are looking to better integrate their pillows and soft furnishings into the rest of their palette and style. The “pop of color” pillows on top of boring couches will look dated.

• Statement marble countertops and kitchen decor: Bold marble with lots of veining and movement will be a popular way to make a statement in a new kitchen.

• Large butler-style kitchen pantries: Hidden pantries and large butler pantries will be popular in larger homes as people still want the advantages of open concept, but a space to hide the mess.

• Creating a bedroom oasis: After the pandemic, there has been a focus on creating a sanctuary for yourself in a chaotic world and the bed is a big part of that. 

Open Floor Plans

Open floor plans have become somewhat controversial in the past year. While many designers have declared open floor plans over. Open spaces allow us to do life together. And while modern home/work living often demands privacy, most of us don’t want to be isolated in a room all day. Furthermore, developers want their properties to appeal to as many potential buyers as possible, so they are still building open-floor-plan homes. Ultimately, it’s just a more practical choice. This is particularly true of open kitchens for families with younger children. There are also easy ways to create privacy within open floor plans. In 2023, semi-open spaces will be the new trend in home interiors. Open layouts have been a trending home interior design, especially in compact apartments, in recent times. In 2023, semi-open spaces with subtle partitions to segregate different spaces will be in trend.

Open floor plans that work smarter and can be easily divided into zones as needed, and for new construction, this will mean layouts that already incorporate flexible rooms that can be turned into offices or gyms. For some people, the open concept works simply by installing sliding doors or including chairs that swivel so they can face the sofa for a hearty conversation or turn toward the television for movie night. 

Arched and Curved Furniture

2023 will also see an amalgamation of modern and traditional home interior design trends, especially in Indian homes. The use of curved furniture, arches, and traditional lighting fixtures can add a different dimension to your modern home interiors. You can also add a traditional statement piece of furniture from your grandparents’ home or a traditional swing. This will bring the old-world charm to your home without needing you to give up on the trending interior design styles of 2023.

Modern contemporary home interiors are a perfect fusion of functional furniture, clean lines, minimal yet aesthetic decor, and muted color schemes. You can also experiment with bold colors but be mindful to compensate with ample natural light and decorative light fixtures to accentuate the interiors. You can also opt for woodwork to bring a sense of warmth to your home.

Maximalism's Comeback

More is more? We’ve heard talk recently of “minimalism fatigue”, and we’ve found ourselves swayed by color and pattern. Glamour is a very big word in interiors right now. Call it an after-effect of being cooped up indoors the past few years, or just the design pendulum swinging to the opposite extreme, but maximalism—or shades of it—is making a comeback. People want romantic paint colors, textures, and shapes, for instance, curves rather than angular and straight lines. It’s part of the event's basic movement and desire to curate joyful, uplifting spaces with the use of punchy hues, curves, and patterns. Multipurpose spaces will be a trend to keep in 2023. For example, I always include a game table in all of my living rooms because I want clients to be able to truly use that space for a multitude of reasons. Multipurpose spaces call for multipurpose furniture, wrapping up our list of top interior design trends. Look for folding and stackable pieces, flexible seating, and more versatile styles — for instance, a dining table that doubles as a ping pong table — to accommodate how we live in our homes today.

Neutrals

Neutrals have had a strong presence in recent years. It's easy to understand why. Neutral colors are easy to incorporate into most design schemes, whether they’re modern, contemporary, traditional, or somewhere in between. Every year we hear neutrals are going away and every year they come back stronger than ever. Neutrals will reign supreme so long as there are white-sand beaches and midnight-black skies. Like elements in nature, neutral spaces are designed to remind us of what matters most by stripping away the extraneous visual noise. Neutrals speak to our core with an invitation to rest and reset. 

Wood Tones

Lighter-colored wood has been incredibly popular in recent years, but Scheck sees more dark and mixed tones falling back into favor in 2023. We love mixing wood tones in our design plans, and we are noticing more and more clients leaning into deeper wood variations than ever before. Mixing wood tones may seem intimidating, but it’s one of the easiest ways to create a space that feels intentional and collected. 

Home Accessories

Outdoor, meet indoors. Materials traditionally seen inside the home are updated to adapt to outside environments, such as style-forward upholstery that’s designed to withstand the elements and offer next-level comfort. Community spaces are the focus, facilitating the gathering and crafting seamless transitions between areas of the home.

In the coming year, we expect to see a rise in more interesting and sentimental accessories. While things like coffee table books will remain staples, we predict that we’ll be seeing more meaningful pieces integrated into design plans. Examples of this include family heirlooms or one-of-a-kind vintage pieces. To achieve this look, try visiting your local antique or thrift shop to see what unique home decor and furniture pieces you can find.

From travertine sinks to marble backsplashes, stone has proven itself as a hot commodity – with extra emphasis on using the raw material in unexpected tones and unexpected ways. It’s about artful marble. Look out for tones of beautiful pinks and deep blues and, deep-green marble. You can start with a coral-colored marble serving platter or plinth. Think of them as art pieces

Organic Materials and Earth Tones

Nature has a calming effect, which is important in our chaotic world today. So, organic materials and earth tones are unlikely to look dated any time soon. Scheck says we should expect to see lots of wood and colors inspired by nature, including mossy greens and peaceful blues. One of our favorite ways to incorporate natural elements is by sourcing live-edge tables made from beautiful, raw wood. Another way to achieve this look is with the addition of greenery. his can be as simple as walking outside and snipping branches or stems from your surroundings. Layer them into vessels around your home among earth-toned vessels, textiles, and art inspired by nature. With the strongest and most immediate association with nature, tones of green are one of the most obvious choices for interior design trends in 2023. Green plays well into an over-arching trend for biophilic design in the home — that is, recreating a connection to nature indoors that can help reproduce some of the health and mood-boosting qualities of spending time in nature.
