Beyond making a statement in a bedroom, the right type of lighting can make a room suitable for reading, relaxing, and, of course, sleeping. Whether you choose to go bold or outfit your interior with a minimalist fixture, there's a lighting design for you.

Offering layers of light creates ambiance. Of all the rooms in your home, your bedroom is probably the only one you spend time in when it’s completely dark, completely bright, and completely somewhere in between. So, getting your bedroom lighting design just right is essential to making it a comfortable place to rest your head at night, to rise and shine each morning and go about your day.

Though bedrooms are primarily for sleeping, they aren’t meant to be dark all the time. A bedroom should have a combination of both portable and installed lighting to provide illumination for tasks like dressing and reading. More than that, your bedroom's lighting should also create a calm and soothing atmosphere for relaxation.

If your bedroom is in need of a little upgrade, you should consider these best bedroom ceiling lights before doing a total overhaul. Redecorating and remodeling can be expensive and time-consuming, and sometimes it doesn’t turn out the way you expect. One great way to significantly change the look and feel of your bedroom without the huge costs is to update your lighting. This can add or reduce the light in a room, which makes the paint look a whole new color and gives the room a different feel.

If you think about it, the lighting ideas that pertain to the rest of your home apply to the bedroom as well. Lighting experts agree that you should aim to light a room in layers. The most basic layer is general, or ambient, lighting. This allows for safe movement throughout the room and serves as a base upon which you layer the rest of your lighting design.

Floor Lamps - Floor lamps can either be used as a stand-alone lighting solution to focus on a particular spot in a room or with other lights that are in the same family. They complement all types of lights – from romantic chandeliers to table lamps. They are tall standing lamps designed to stand on the floor and position light higher in the room. A floor lamp usually includes these common design features: A weighted floor lamp base that sits on the floor and provides stability. They are also a practical lighting source that can be used in almost any room of your home. Not only are these lamps functional, but they also influence the mood of the room as a whole. Sometimes even the lightbulb you select can make a big difference in the effect of the floor lamp in the room.

Table Lamps - Table lamps serve primarily to generate illumination. Often, they are placed on the bed's side tables if not anywhere else in the house. Apart from providing reading light, they also account for nighttime luminescence. For an office, a dining room, or a bedroom, the lighting effects enhance or soften the lines of the spaces and communicate, like the types of furniture and the architecture, the culture and lives of those who live in those places.

Night Light -  A night light is a small, low-power electric light kept on at night for comfort and safety. They provide enough light to see the outlines of objects in a room but are dim enough to not disturb your sleep. Night lights are often used to comfort children who are afraid of the dark. Night lights can aid relaxation before bed, reduce fear of the dark, and provide lighting at night for better visibility.

According to, night light affects the production of melatonin in the body which is a sleep-enhancing hormone. Night light throws this hormone out of balance affecting sleep negatively. However, this is usually the case if the lights are very bright. Dim lights don't hurt, in fact, they can be beneficial for sleep.

Ceiling Fan with Lights - While most people don’t consider a ceiling fan with lights to be the main source of lighting in the bedroom, this is often what many people have, especially since they perform double duty. Ceiling fans with lights allow you to contribute to the layered lighting design of your room. Many ceiling fans also include dimming features, which are ideal for reading in bed at night. Consider choosing a light kit that coordinates with the fixtures and appliances in other areas of your home. Bedrooms and living rooms can benefit from ceiling fans with lights, especially if they have taller ceilings or open floor plans.

Pendant Lights - One of the valuable things about a pendant fixture is that it brings the light down from the ceiling and puts it closer to your counter or table or favorite chair, or wherever you're going to need it. As this implies, pendant lights can be very useful for task lighting. Pendant lighting is ideal for any room that requires specific, task-oriented, or ambient lighting, so they're perfect for living rooms. When hung from the center of the ceiling, pendants provide ample lighting to create a relaxing space to spend time with family and friends.

Chandelier - Chandeliers aren't just for sprawling country estates and grand halls – they can in fact work very well in a living room or bedroom and are lighting ideas. You can use a chandelier in any space no matter how big or small. They are incredibly ornate and can make the bedroom feel even more high-end.

Depending on the type of chandelier that you buy, you can easily find one that is dripping with crystals or uses deer antlers as a part of its design. For most rooms, only one chandelier is enough to provide illumination as well as aesthetic value. If all the rooms including the kitchen, foyer, bedrooms, dining room, and entryway, have a chandelier each then they are too many. A good practice is to keep a correct balance between some rooms having chandeliers and some not.

Flush Mount - Flush ceiling lights can be used to seamlessly blend décor. Flush mount light fixture designs range from classic and minimal to modern and elaborate. Flush mount ceiling lights are beneficial when it comes to cleaning as well because they are less prone to letting bugs and dust into the fixture. Flush mount lighting sits directly against the ceiling and shines light downward. Because there's no space between the ceiling and the light itself, flush mount lights are ideal in rooms with shorter ceilings and for keeping dust and debris away from the bulb and shade.

String Lights - Since they do not work by heating the light filament like traditional bulbs energy is not wasted. LED fairy lights do not produce heat, are cool to the touch, and are eco-friendly. You do not have to worry about UV, lead, or mercury when you use LEDs. But the lights can also trigger dopamine, the 'feel-good chemical in the brain. "With these bright experiences with lights, we do have the physiological response from the nervous system that helps make us more alert, more aware, and can bring about these feelings of happiness.

Smart Lighting - Smart lighting is an advanced way to light your home. Smart LED bulbs contain software that connects to an app, smart home assistant, or other smart accessories so you can automate your lights or control them remotely, eliminating the need for traditional wall switches Smart bulbs have a simple install and the price is easier on the wallet than other smart home upgrades. These LEDs can be six times more energy-efficient than incandescent lighting. Considering these bulbs can last for over 25,000 hours of use, changing over to these bulbs is cost-effective in the long run

Portable Light -Portable lamps are lights (or lamps) that can be picked up, moved, and plugged in wherever there is an electrical outlet. Floor lamps, Torchieres, and Table lamps are considered portable lamps. With portable lighting, you can take it with you regardless of your location. Although people might think of portable lighting just for the construction industry, they are handy pieces of equipment that are very versatile. For example, they can be used for various mining projects as they provide illumination for mining holes. Furthermore, they are used in the construction of tunnels where there is no supply of natural light.

Finally, decorative lighting creates the focal point itself, either through its fixture or the light it produces (i.e., a pattern on the wall). When planning the lighting for your bedroom, keeps two ideas in mind to help you achieve the right feel: abundance and flexibility. Multiple light sources with lower wattage are preferable to a single bright fixture. And don't overlook the power of dimmers: Installing them can help you achieve the right mood when it’s time to wind down at the end of the day. Click through for nine types of fixtures, each with its own place and functionality when it lives in the bedroom. Then, install a medley of these bedroom lighting ideas, and you'll be one step closer to your own oasis.
