Transitional kitchens are sometimes hard to define but that’s part of its charm, and many would say, that’s the whole point. While an ideal kitchen is more on remodeling that improves the aesthetics, functionality, and, most importantly, your enjoyment of one of the most used spaces. In the world of kitchen design, there are several different categories of style but what's best is what you're most comfortable at. 

Adding new custom kitchen cabinetry including a possible new kitchen layout and design can dramatically alter the look and feels of your home. As bright kitchens are a classic with an overall very clean and classy look that will never go. It may surprise many that in some cases, smaller kitchens can almost be more efficient than larger ones.  The key to efficiency in this is budget. 
If you want to update your home but have a small budget and want to make sustainable choices, what would be the one area you’d refresh?
For me, it would be the kitchen.

1. Update Your lighting

 This one little refresh can update the look and feel of your whole space AND make it much easier to work in. Look for modern but inexpensive light fixtures locally or online. For most families and households, the kitchen space is one of the most important parts of their home. The most obvious reason why kitchen lighting is so essential is that it maximizes visibility in working areas. Well-placed ceiling spotlights help to illuminate worktops for food preparation, whereas under a unit or cabinet lighting styles assist darker spots within the kitchen.​ ​

Add puck lighting or a string of tiny white lights underneath your cabinets to illuminate your counter for working and to add ambiance.

2.  Design and Open up your walls

​Kitchen design is about finding the products and fittings which suit your taste and requirements, arranging them in a way that will allow you to feel comfortable. Yes, you still have more variations and changes that can be done on the wall or tiles in the kitchen. Removing some of your upper cabinetry can completely transform your kitchen. It’ll feel lighter, more modern, and perhaps even more functional. The importance of good kitchen design cannot be overstated. Designing and planning your kitchen is key to making it user-friendly for you and your family. This space is about storage, access to appliances, safety when using appliances, easy access to food storage, and so on. Open shelving is a great way to display stacks of the everyday dishes you use along with items like cookbooks, serving platters, and fresh herbs. It’s more convenient for grabbing and putting away dishes where they belong (just make sure to have stacks of everyday dishes in the same colors and shapes so it doesn’t feel cluttery.)

3.  Add a backsplash

 ​Adding a backsplash does wonder to ramp up the personality of your kitchen. It feels modern even if you simply add white subway tile with old oak cabinets. Protecting your walls from water damage is an especially important backsplash function. Kitchens and bathrooms are both susceptible to water damage, which can cause serious mildew problems and structural issues. Having a backsplash installed will prevent frequent water contact from becoming serious damage later on.  You might even consider shiplap or wainscoting panels that as an inexpensive but beautiful backsplash. ​A beautiful backsplash can also add value to your home.

4. Upgrade your hardware

​It's amazing how simply changing out your kitchen hardware can dramatically impact the look and feel of your kitchen. The most prominent hardware in your kitchen is the cabinet and drawer handles and knobs. Simply upgrading some of your kitchen appliances or lighting fixtures can help make the kitchen more functional as well. The cabinet hardware is important for the design of the kitchen cabinet, whenever you are designing your kitchen, you will normally start with the appliances and cabinets and from there everything is personalized with cabinet pulls, knobs, or aprons, etc. The kitchen hardware holds significant weight towards shaping the design of the room. From brass doorknobs to chrome cabinet handles, elegant kitchen hardware polishes the room with subtle details.

   7. Paint your cabinets

   ​Paint hides character features. Paint is thicker than stain, so it sits on top of the wood rather than being absorbed. Paint will give your kitchen a whole new look. It's amazing what a difference painting your cabinets can make. If you have perfectly good wood cabinets but hate the dated color, consider painting them instead of purchasing a whole new set. You could go classic white, a soft, light grey, or try a two-toned look. Two coats of quality paint are usually sufficient, but you may want to add a third coat because kitchen cabinets take lots of punishment from cooking heat and day-to-day use, and wood surfaces need all the protection they can get. When done correctly, painted cabinets will look just like new. You'll be stunned by the results, and your friends won't believe you when you say they were painted not replaced. The decision to paint or replace your cabinets depends on the current shape that they are in, so painting isn't a wise choice for all cabinets.

Family, friends, and guests at a party tend to congregate around the kitchen. When there is enough space, the kitchen can be quite cramped and difficult to maneuver. This might be the most significant advantage of having a spacious kitchen. A large kitchen offers you enough room to place your cabinets where you can conveniently put all the things you need for cooking.
