COOKING

If you are purchasing new cooking appliances, it is worth using efficiency as a guide because they tend to have long lives. Big things start from small beginnings. So since a handful of appliances use a bulk of the home's energy, it's important to keep them well-maintained and running efficiently. These appliances include the refrigerator, dishwasher, washing machine, and clothes dryer. The key to efficient cooking is understanding your cooking habits.  Don't leave the refrigerator door open (like this) and always check how each home appliances function. 

DISHWASHING

​More than half of the energy used by a dishwasher goes towards heating the water. Some use the eco-settings that are built into the unit and rinse the dishes off before starting the unit. But you should wait until it's full because you're going to use not only less energy but also less water. Also, only run the dishwasher when it's full. Thanks to national efficiency standards, the energy, and water consumed by new dishwashers have dropped dramatically while making great strides in cleaning performance. Also for washers and dryers, they should only be run with full loads, and clothes should be washed in cold water.

​HOME ELECTRONICS

An estimated 10% to 15% of all electricity used in American homes can be attributed to the buzz of electronic devices, not because they use a lot of energy, but because of their sheer numbers. The best way for you to lessen the consumption is to unplug devices when they are not in use. This also works for all the overall homes. Consider planting trees near your home.

Most of the energy used to wash clothes is for heating the water. New resource-efficient washers provide excellent wash performance while cutting energy and water use by half or more.

The most practical way to do this is to use your windows during good weather, open your drapes or blinds on the south side of your home to bring the heat into your home. Keep your windows free from trees and shrubs in the winter so the rays aren't being blocked. In the summer, keep your blinds and windows closed to block the heat.

​More than three-quarters of all U.S. households have air conditioners. As AC becomes the norm in all regions of the country, it is important to realize that often the easiest and most affordable way to stay comfortable during the summer is to reduce your need for air conditioning.

3. Maintain cooling systems
4. Avoid heat buildup during the day
